Description

Angel House, also known as the J. David Lewis Premises, is a late 19th-century terraced house featuring an early 20th-century tiled shop interior. It is part of a nine-window terrace and is finished in stucco with a slate roof, yellow brick stacks, bracketed eaves, and a two-storey, three-window front. The upper floor has three plate glass sash windows. The ground floor showcases a large shopfront from around 1900 or the early 20th century, which includes a broad centre sliding plate-glass sash window flanked by a window on the left and a door on the right. The shopfront is divided by pilasters that have inset floral tile panels, with a tiled apron beneath the centre window displaying blue lettering on white that reads '......s and Son Family Butchers', along with blue tiled skirting. Large brackets support a broad fascia that features cast-iron cresting. The shop door is panelled with two rows of three panels, with the upper panels being round-headed and an overlight above.

Inside, the shop is entirely tiled, featuring a cornice row of Art Nouveau flowers that resemble those on the exterior piers. The walls are lined with cream tiles set diagonally, and large wall panels have raised borders of white diagonally-set tiles, with a central larger tile in blue and white depicting an animal head. The floor is finished in a black and white chequerboard tile pattern.
