Description

Golwg Yr Afon is a late 18th or early 19th century shop and house built of whitewashed rubble stone, topped with an imitation slate roof. It features a large stone right-end stack, shared with the adjacent property at No. 4. A stone stack at the left end, formerly shared with No. 6, has been removed. The two-storey front presents an unusual design, as the ground floor appears to have been originally intended for commercial use. Above, there are three 12-pane sash windows, each with a timber lintel and slate sill. The ground floor windows are united by a single long timber lintel, and include a large 16-pane sash window, a door, and another sash window. Slate sills are present on all ground floor windows. To the left, a flush-panelled 6-panel door is set above a small, paned overlight featuring grid tracery. The other entrance door has a pair of 3-panel doors, with the central panel now glazed, and a traceried overlight incorporating an unusual oval and lozenge design. This building is an unusual integrated shop and house, possibly linked to the nearby market.
