Description

No. 45 Warwick Street is a house and shop built around 1870, located at the end of a terrace. It was altered around 1905, when Jacobean and Georgian style features were added to the exterior, and a tiled grocers shop was incorporated into the interior. The building is stuccoed and has a slate roof, rising to three storeys with attics. The attic features a curved pediment with scrolled sides, and the parapet is adorned with end ball finials. A moulded cornice runs along the top.

The upper floors are distinguished by giant composite pilasters and three light canted bays, which have pilasters and glazing bars only in the top half of the windows. The ground floor showcases a projecting shop front that includes a cornice with ovolo moulding and early 20th-century gilt lettering displaying "LEAL & SON." There are three granite pilasters with composite capitals featuring female masks, and the upper parts are fluted. The shop front is wide and round-headed, embellished with an elaborate keystone and decorated spandrels. The left side of the shop front includes a decorative panel and an arched doorcase with ovolo moulding, a keystone, and scrolled spandrels, along with a fanlight and a late 20th-century door.

Inside, there is a mid-19th-century staircase leading to the upper floors, featuring stick balusters (some of which are missing), a mahogany handrail, and column-shaped newel posts. The first-floor door has reeded architraves and a six-panelled door. The ground floor shop, dating from around 1905, has a ceiling divided into squares by wooden divisions and a rolled steel joist with large brackets. The rear of the shop includes two partially fluted pilasters and a cornice with swags. The right side and rear walls are covered with early 20th-century tiling, primarily featuring tall yellow panels with blue, grey, and green borders, topped with grey panels surrounded by floral tiles.
