Description
The Castle Hotel is a building dating from around 1830, with later alterations. It is two storeys high and has three windows, with a carriage entry to the left. The exterior features whitewashed plaster over a rubble plinth, a moderately pitched slate roof, and plain eaves with rendered stacks.
On the first floor, there is a 12-pane sash window in the center, framed by a shouldered architrave. This window is flanked by raised plaster lettering that reads "CASTLE HOTEL," adorned with scrolls below. The building also has two canted oriel windows with corniced tops, featuring Victorian sashes, sidebar glazing, and narrow side sashes. The ground floor windows are also Victorian sashes with sidebar glazing and shouldered architraves. The central doorway has an ornate doorcase with a flat hood supported by bulbous consoles over moulded pilasters, and it retains its original six flush panelled door.
The carriage entrance bay is slightly stepped down to the left and features a two-light casement window on the first floor. Below this, there is a plaque from the 1930s for the "Cycle Touring Club" with a winged wheel design. The carriage entry has a broad segmental arch, and there are modern gates.
