Description

Rhydfelen and Y Gangell is a house and cottage built from whitewashed rubble stone with slate roofs and stone chimneys. The building is L-shaped, with the house at the front and the cottage as a rear wing. The house features a square stone chimney on the left, while the chimney on the right has been removed. The windows are of 20th-century design, with stained wood sashes. It is possible that the house was originally a lofted cottage without upper windows.

On the ground floor, which is offset to the right, there are six-pane sashes on either side of the door, with the right sash being broader than the left. The door is a 20th-century addition in a narrowed opening, and all openings have stone voussoirs. To the left, there is a narrow small sash that lights the fireplace end. The first floor has a 6-pane sash under the eaves above the window to the left of the door, which may have been inserted later, and above the door is a 20th-century catslide dormer with a broad low 6-pane sash. The left end wall has a small light on the ground floor, while the right end wall has a window on each floor, including a large loft window and a small light on the ground floor to the right. The rear features a narrow long 6-pane stair light to the left of center, under the eaves.

The attached cottage has a square end stack on the left and a heavily offset frontage to the right, with a small 4-pane casement on either side of the door, which has timber lintels above it. There is a plaque to the left of the door that reads 'Y Gangell Yma ganwyd Elfed 1860-1953 Pregethwr Emynydd Bardd'. In front of the cottage, there are cobblestones, and the windowless end wall and rear wall are also made of rubble stone.

Inside the cottage, there is an entrance passage with a door facing the kitchen. The kitchen has a door leading to the parlour on the right and a fireplace with a beam on the left end. This beam was replaced during 20th-century repairs, and above the oak joists, there is a boarded ceiling.
