Description
The War Memorial and stone seat is a Grade II listed structure commemorating those who served in the First World War. It features a bronze statue of a soldier in First World War battledress, standing at ease with one hand resting on a rifle that has a bayonet fixed. The statue is mounted on a squared silver granite pedestal, which has a moulded plinth and chamfered angles, and this pedestal rests on rock-faced granite steps. The front of the pedestal is inscribed with the words "To the immortal memory of the men of Carmarthenshire who fell in the Great War 1914-1918," along with the Welsh phrase "Mewn angof ni chant fod" below it. There is an inscription at the rear dedicated to the 1610 nurses, officers, and men of all ranks who fell, and a side inscription honors the fallen of the 1939-45 war.
Surrounding the rear of the memorial is a semicircular stone bench, featuring a sandstone ashlar seat on a rock-faced grey limestone plinth, with a tooled grey limestone back. The ends of the seat are marked by grey stone obelisks, leading to a low stone wall with rails that extends to the outer obelisk and further to the Infirmary gatepiers.
