Description
The Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen War Memorial is a granite structure featuring a bronze statue of an infantryman on a high pedestal, created by W.J. Williams of Brynamman. The statue, which is larger than life, depicts the soldier with his head bowed and hands clasped over a reversed rifle. The pedestal has battered sides and is inscribed with the names of those who served in both the Great War and the Second World War. The main inscription on the left side reads, "O barch ac anrhydedd i ddynion Gawauncaegurwen a'r ardal roddasant eu bywyd yn aberth dros rhyddid eu gwlad yn y Rhyfel Mawr 1914-1919." The memorial features a moulded cornice with a semi-circle above the center of the cornice on each face. It has a large plinth with a coved top moulding and a plain base, all resting on a bottom step made of rock-faced stone. The memorial is enclosed by an iron railing made by Bayliss, Jones & Bayliss of Wolverhampton.
