Description
The furnace bank at the former Amman Iron Works is a Grade II listed structure featuring a high rubble stone revetment that supports an earth bank. The facing walls are made of battered grey limestone and rise to heights of approximately 7 to 8 meters. The central portion of the bank projects outwards and measures about 15 meters in length, featuring two arched openings for the hot blast, while the returns on either side extend for 10 meters. The right side includes arches, whereas the left side does not. To the left, the revetment extends for about 15 meters without arches, while the right side, of similar length, has four arches, all of which are surrounded by brick. Additionally, the base of a blast engine-house remains to the east. The upper level of the structure was utilized for preparing materials for charging the furnaces and included separate iron ore calcining kilns.
