Description
The Madeley War Memorial is a sandstone structure built to honor those who served in the First and Second World Wars. It is square in shape and faces east. The memorial features a life-size statue of a soldier in First World War uniform, standing 'at ease' with a rifle at his right side, supported by a rock at the back. The statue is positioned on a tall, tapered pedestal with a moulded cap stone, which rests on a square plinth. Below this is a single-stepped base.
The pedestal is adorned with a foliated frieze and has raised inscription panels on all four sides. The east face displays the inscription: 'IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO FELL / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / [Names] / THEIR NAME LIVETH EVERMORE'. The north face commemorates those who fell in the Second World War with the inscription: 'IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO FELL / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1939-1945 / [Names]'. The west and south faces of the pedestal are left blank.
The memorial is enclosed within an octagonal-shaped area formed by sandstone curbing, which is topped with late 20th-century steel railings.
