Description
Providence Baptist Chapel in Cwmdu is a chapel built in 1789, rebuilt in 1839, and renovated in 1883. The building features a rendered and painted long front with a lateral slate roof and wide eaves. It has two tall round-arched windows with Y-tracery on either side of a central round-arched doorway, which includes a Y-traceried fanlight and double panelled doors. The gable end is half slate-hung and has a tall window similar to those at the front. The rear is constructed of whitewashed rubble and also has two windows like those at the front.
Inside, there is a three-sided gallery with a panelled and corbelled front supported by marbled cast iron columns with foliate capitals. The rear of the timber pulpit is framed by an elaborate classical round-arched plaster design. The chapel features a large seat with a timber half-rail and turned wooden balusters, with newels topped by ball finials. The ceiling is a simple flat ribbed plaster design with a central rose, and the lobby window includes marginal and incised coloured panes.
