Description
Pen-rhiw is a farmhouse consisting of two parts, with the main section likely dating from the mid-19th century, as indicated by its different outline on the tithe map of 1840. The building is constructed of colourwashed rubble stone, featuring colourwashed slate-hanging on the front. It has two storeys and an almost square plan, topped with two parallel half-hipped roofs covered in imitation slates, and rendered end stacks at the ends of the front roof.
The front has two windows, which are small plate glass sash windows that are widely spaced. There are three buttresses on the ground floor: one on each side of the centre and one at the left angle. The right side wall is made of colourwashed rubble and includes a small 12-pane sash window on the first floor to the left, and a door with an overlight to the right of centre, which may have been added later. The left end is rendered and features a large 12-pane sash window on the ground floor.
Attached to the left is a lower service wing that is set back and has roughcast cladding, along with a massive square stack at the left end. This wing has small square four-pane sashes in the centre and right, a wide 20th-century triple window in the centre of the ground floor, and a blocked doorway to the right.
At the rear of the main house, there is an 18-pane stair light in the centre, with its head set lower than the flanking first-floor 12-pane sashes. The ground floor has a small square light to the left and a large 20th-century triple window to the right, along with an outshut rear to the service wing.
The small front garden is enclosed by a stone rubble wall, with a gateway to the right flanked by stone rubble piers and a stile in the returning wall.
