Description

Saint Philomena's is a monastic guest house, dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of squared rock-faced grey limestone with concrete tile roofs, which replaced earlier red clay tiles. The main block has a pyramid roof, and a half-octagonal castellated front projection extends from the right side of the facade. This projection features a corbelled parapet with coping dropped at small embrasures in the centre of each face. A flat roof with a small gable sits behind the projection, joining the main roofline. The south and east, west and north faces of the projection have cambered-headed leaded casements with stone voussoirs; the windows are two-light on the upper floor and three-light below, though some leaded lights have been replaced with plate glass. A single lancet window is present on the north face where casement windows would typically be found. A raised chimneybreast and stone stack are visible on the south side wall. A small ground floor lean-to is also present.

The main range, set back from the road, has a similar three-light casement window on the first floor to the left, above a smaller two-light window on the ground floor, which are not aligned. The left end wall features a pair of casements over a triple casement to the right, with the upper casement pair set lower than the first-floor level. A central round arched doorway, with stone voussoirs, is flanked by a small pointed single light window above. Ground floor windows are 20th-century replacements.

To the left, a former chapel runs west with a lower, clay-tiled roof and five arched leaded windows. It was originally hipped at the end but was extended in the late 20th century with further building.

To the right of the tower, a triple casement is visible in the north end wall of the main block. A wing set back, and hipped at the north end, has a roof carried down in a catslide fashion. A chimney once stood on the ridge but has since been removed. The wing’s front elevation features a leaded casement pair under the eaves and a deep lean-to to the ground floor, with a hipped roof at the right corner, joining the north end catslide roof. Two small-paned timber casements and a door are present on the north side.

The rear elevation has an arched board door with stone voussoirs, followed by a leaded casement pair, then a large 20th-century window (formerly a four-pane sash), a casement pair above under the eaves, and a single light to the right. A rear outbuilding at a right angle has two 20th-century metal windows and a timber lean-to addition. The rear wall of a later addition is constructed of cement blocks.

The drawing room in the projecting bay has an inglenook with glazed tiles and a deep copper hood. The dining room, located in the return angle, features a smaller fireplace with glazed tiles. Both rooms are divided by leaded glazed partitions. The building was not available for internal inspection.
