Description

Sparta House is a Grade II listed building that was originally constructed as a house and later converted into a hotel. The exterior features painted stucco and a slate roof behind a parapet, with large rendered end stacks. The building stands four storeys high and is double-fronted, showcasing rustication on the lower two floors, with the ground floor having channelled rustication. On the ground floor, there are large plate glass sash windows on either side of the entrance door, which is a six-panel design with an overlight, all beneath an ornate stucco cornice that is broken forward on each side over scrolled consoles.

Above the ground floor, there are two 2-storey canted oriels that feature large 2-4-2-pane sashes, moulded cornices, and ogee-curved bases. An ornamented band runs across the facade at the first floor level but is interrupted, possibly missing, on the oriels at the second floor. The third floor windows are 4-pane sashes set in moulded architraves, with a blank centre light and a sill band. The building is topped with a moulded dentil cornice and parapet.

A slate tablet inscribed with "Sparta House" is located at the centre of the first floor. The right end wall remains unpainted and features a long rendered chimney that appears to have 18 flues. The rear elevation facing Bridge Street is roughcast with a parapet, basement, and three storeys, featuring 4-pane sashes on either side and stair lights at half levels in between. All stair lights are modern plastic windows. The property includes 19th-century area railings with stud-head finials.

Inside, it is said to have a good staircase with a moulded newel post, heavy mahogany surrounds in the ground floor rooms, and a plaster cornice in the right ground floor room.
