Description

John Williams Hall comprises a group of symmetrical buildings, numbers 7 to 12 inclusive, dating from 1867. The buildings are of four storeys, with a narrower two-storey front with a basement at number 12. They are faced in scribed stucco, with rusticated detailing to the ground floor. A continuous cill band runs across the first floor, and there is a prominent plinth. The roofs are slate, with brick and cement rendered chimney stacks, and coved eaves. The windows are hornless sashes, with architraves to the third-floor windows and the central windows on the first and second floors; the second-floor windows have Egyptian-style pedimented lintels. Three-storey bay windows feature reed and bobbin cornices on the outer bays. Decorative cast-iron window box holders are positioned above the central windows on the third floor. Ornamental panels are present at each end of the building, possibly intended as datestones; the south end (number 7) features an inscribed Gothic script, the letter ‘B’ indicating ownership by the Bonsall estate. Victorian half-glazed porches, with reed and bobbin cornices (except at number 10), provide entrance access, and panelled doors are found at numbers 7 to 9, with half-glazed doors at numbers 10 to 12. Railings are present to the front of all buildings except number 10. A rubble gable end to number 7 displays a plaque inscribed: "This Pine End belongs to J G W Bonsall Esq of Ffronfraith. Built 1867." Internally, the buildings retain their original plan and open-well staircases with octagonal newels.
