Description
Nanternis Independent Chapel is a building constructed in 1867. The chapel features a pebbledashed lateral front with smooth rendered quoins and openings that have lugged and shouldered surrounds, complete with keystones, which are details from the early 20th century. It has a slate roof with projecting eaves and bargeboards.
The front of the chapel includes two long, round-arched 28/20-pane hornless sash windows at the center. These windows have radiating upper glazing and narrower glazing towards the center, with the main arched panes showcasing colored and etched glass depicting the Lamb of God, flanked by colored panes. Each outer bay has a smaller arched 13/10-pane hornless sash window with similar glazing bars. Slate sills are present beneath these windows. There are round-arched matching doorways in each outer bay, both featuring boarded doors and 9-pane fanlights with radiating glazing. A plaque between the long windows within a rendered panel reads: "Nanternis. Adeiladwyd yn y Flwyddyn 1867." The left end of the building is blank, while the rear has two 30-pane sash windows on each storey. A schoolroom, built in 1923, is attached to the right end. The chapel is set behind a large cobbled forecourt, with rubble boundary walls that include railings and a central gate.
Inside, there is a three-sided gallery with long raised and fielded panels at the front, adorned with moulded beading. The gallery is supported by plain iron posts, cast by Thomas and Co. of Cardigan. It features painted tiered seating with ramped ends. The interior has twin lobbies, with a pulpit positioned between them, featuring a polygonal panelled front and flanking stairs. The panelled balustrade continues to form the sides of the Big Seat, which has a curved pew at its front. The painted tiered pews also have ramped ends and panelled backs. The ceiling is coved along the long sides, with the center part being boarded and ribbed, featuring an octagonal wooden ventilator and radiating ribs.
