Description

The University of Aberystwyth Overseas Unit is a pair of terraced buildings that date from the late Georgian period, with some Victorian alterations. They are three stories tall, with a basement and attic, featuring three-window fronts made of scribed stucco. The buildings have a high parapet, a band course, and a channelled ground floor. The slate roof is complemented by brick and rubble chimney stacks, and there are pitched roof dormers with decorative bargeboards on the right. The left outer bays have full-height splayed bay windows adorned with cornices, colonnettes, and panelled aprons.

The central entrances are half-glazed porches with splayed angles and colonnettes on the left, while the right side has pilaster strips. The right-hand front features a first-floor balcony with brackets and Gothic traceried cast-iron railings, which extends over the porch. At the rear of the Overseas Unit on the left, there is a part slate-hung conservatory.

Inside, the Overseas Unit retains fine interiors, including an entrance hall with arched openings leading to a groin-vaulted bay and a stairwell with a curved handrail. The main ground floor room on the left has a broad cornice decorated with foliage, a ribbed dado rail, and arched alcoves on two walls, with fluted pilasters on the east side and a panelled splay to a bat window that has recesses leading to the Seminar Room. The stairwell features a Gothic cupboard at the top. The Student Health Centre also preserves good Georgian details, including an acanthus and fleuron cornice in the deep entrance hall, reeded pilasters, a square stairwell, and a stepped handrail.
