Description

1 Laura Place is a late 18th century, two-storey building with a basement and attic, originally comprising six windows but later extended. The front is stuccoed and stepped upwards at number 4, with scribed ground floors and quoins, alongside a bracketed cill band to number 1. Slate roofs have hipped ends, wide bracket eaves, and rubble chimney stacks with brick cappings. Dormers are slate-hung with cusped bargeboards, and the windows are paired sashes, with smaller panes below and taller windows on the ground floors. Numbers 1 and 4 feature margins, and number 1 has bracketed cornices to the ground floor. Blind boxes are present on numbers 2 to 6, and the central first-floor windows of numbers 1 to 3 are blocked. Entrances to numbers 1 to 5 are offset to the right, while the entrance to number 6 is located in New Street. All entrances possess fine doorcases featuring Roman Doric columns and bracketed hoods, paired panelled doors with reveals and varied traceried fanlights, the last being modern to number 6. Number 3 has carriage lamps. Wrought iron railings with interlace balusters are retained along the front. The stuccoed end elevations of numbers 1 and 6 feature windows broadly spaced to number 1 and mostly blocked to number 6. A stepped down extension towards the rear of number 6 provides the main entrance. The rears of the building consist of various cross ranges and lean-tos constructed from roughcast and whitewashed rubble, with a few small-pane sash windows and dormers. An Art Nouveau chimney pot is located on number 4’s cross range. Some fine interiors remain, including an ornate openwell staircase in number 6, with a segmental arch on Doric columns leading to the dining room. Moulded cornices, panelled shutters, and doors are also present.
