Description

5 Laura Place is a late 18th century, two-storey building with a basement and attic, originally comprising six houses. The building features stucco facades stepped upwards at number 4, with scribed ground floors and quoins, and a bracketed cill band at number 1. The slate roofs are hipped at the ends and have wide bracketed eaves, with rubble chimney stacks topped with brick. Dormers are slate hung and have cusped bargeboards, while the windows are paired sashes, with smaller panes to the lower floors. Numbers 1 and 4 have margins, and number 1 also features bracket cornices to the ground floor. Numbers 2 to 6 have blind boxes, and the central first-floor windows of numbers 1 to 3 are blocked. The entrances to numbers 1 to 5 are offset to the right, while the entrance to number 6 is located in New Street. All entrances retain fine doorcases with Roman Doric columns, bracketed hoods, panelled doors, and reveals, except for number 6 which have reeded details. Fanlights above the doors are varied, with modern replacements at number 6. Number 3 is also lit by carriage lamps. Original wrought iron railings with interlace balusters are present at the front. The stuccoed end elevations of numbers 1 and 6 feature windows spaced widely at number 1, and nearly all blocked at number 6. A stepped-down extension towards the rear of number 6 contains the main entrance. The rear elevations incorporate various cross ranges and lean-tos of roughcast and whitewashed rubble, with some small-pane sash windows and dormers. An Art Nouveau chimney pot is on a cross range at number 4.

Some fine interiors remain, including an ornate open-well staircase at number 6, and a segmental arch on Doric columns leading to the dining room. Further interior features include moulded cornices and panelled shutters and doors.
