Description
8 Laura Place is a two-storey building with a basement and attic, located to the south of New Street, overlooking St Michael’s and All Angels Parish Church to the west. The building features three windows on the front, with Nos 7 and 8 having a cement render finish, while No 9 is slightly elevated and has a three-plus-one window arrangement, also rendered. The first floor is scribed, and the ground floor is channelled, with quoins present. The roofs are slate, with bracket eaves and chimney stacks made of cement render, rubble, and brick.
Nos 7 and 8 have Victorian dormers with cusped bargeboards, while No 9 has modern dormers with grouped floors. No 9 also features raised pediments on the first floor above a stringcourse that aligns with the eaves of Nos 7 and 8. The left end of the building has scribed cement render, with a prominent entrance for No 7, which includes a fine fluted column doorcase topped with a wide cornice, panelled reveals, and a door with a traceried fanlight. Nos 8 and 9 have similar doorcases, with No 8 featuring double doors. The stringcourse of No 9 continues around the right side, adorned with pediments over bolection moulded lintels, and the sash windows are fitted with shutters that do not have glazing bars.
The southeast corner of the building has an Edwardian octagonal ‘prospect tower’ with small panes in the upper sashes, an egg and dart cornice, and volute brackets. The rear of the building is partly constructed of rubble, featuring a tall 18-pane sash window in the staircase area, while Nos 7 and 8 have a rubble rear as well.
All properties retain their original wrought iron railings with interlace balusters, and No 9 is bordered on the right by a cement rendered wall. The interiors of the buildings preserve significant contemporary details, especially in the entrance halls. No 8 features a stairwell arch supported by paired fluted Doric columns with acanthus ornamentation and a panelled soffit, along with reeded doorcases and other details.
