Description

Staff House is a 19th-century building located to the south of New Street, overlooking St Michael’s and All Angels Parish Church to the west. It features a two-storey basement and attic design. Nos 7 and 8 have three-window fronts and are finished in cement render, while No 9 is stepped up with a three-plus-one window arrangement and also rendered. The first floor is scribed, and the ground floor is channelled, with quoins present. The roofs are slate, with bracket eaves and chimney stacks made of cement render, rubble, and brick.

Victorian dormers with cusped bargeboards are found on Nos 7 and 8, while modern dormers are present on No 9, which also features raised pediments on the first floor above a stringcourse that aligns with the eaves of Nos 7 and 8. The left end of No 7 has scribed cement render and a prominent entrance with a fine fluted column doorcase, wide cornice, panelled reveals, and a door topped with a traceried fanlight. Nos 8 and 9 have similar doorcases, with No 8 featuring double doors. The stringcourse of No 9 continues around the right side, adorned with pediments over bolection moulded lintels, and the sash windows have shutters without glazing bars.

The southeast corner showcases an Edwardian octagonal ‘prospect tower’ with small panes in the upper sashes, an egg and dart cornice, and volute brackets. The rear of the building is partly rubble, featuring a tall 18-pane sash window in the staircase area, with Nos 7 and 8 also having a rubble rear.

All properties retain their original wrought iron railings with interlace balusters. No 9 is bounded on the right by a cement rendered wall.

The interiors of the houses maintain significant contemporary details, especially in the entrance halls. No 8 includes a stairwell arch supported by paired fluted Doric columns with acanthus ornamentation and a panelled soffit, along with reeded doorcases and other features.
