Description
The United Theological College is a three-storey building with a basement and attics, featuring a five-bay symmetrical front with advanced end and central bays. It is constructed from bull-nosed rubble with freestone dressings and includes gable parapets, a cornice, entablature, cill, and plinth bands. The roofs are slate, with a steep pitch on the cross gables and a Mansard roof on the main structure, complemented by blue brick chimney stacks. The attics have flat-roofed dormers and casement windows.
The end and central bays are adorned with steep Renaissance Dutch gables, which have semi-circular pediments and volute scroll kneelers supported by pilaster strips, along with plain entablature and cornice. The paired sash windows feature scalloped shell lintels, while a small-pane glazed bullseye window is centrally located with a swag-decorated cill. The flanking bays have a balustraded parapet. The building predominantly has horned sash windows, with French windows on the first floor of the advanced bays and tripartite outer windows on the ground floor. The first-floor windows have pedimented lintels, and there is a cornice on the ground floor along with blind boxes.
The central entrance is arched and features a Gibbs surround with ornamental foliage and dragon-carved spandrels. It includes raised panelled double doors with glazed heads and sash windows in the basement.
To the left, there is a similar three-storey and attic two-bay structure along Marine Terrace, which has end and central pilaster strips. A central finial is positioned between twin pitched roof dormers that display Renaissance details, and the casement windows have heavily keystoned arched heads. The first floor has paired sash windows with pedimented lintels. The blind end wall facing Pier Street features a Dutch gable. Adjoining this is a one-storey and attic snecked rubble structure with a Mansard roof, accessed from King Street, along with a further two-storey and basement range to the left.
Inside, the college retains a hall with a terrazzo floor, a broad staircase, inscribed glass, and a commemorative brass plaque.
