Description

Y Glyn is a late Georgian building located with its main elevation facing southeast. It is a three-storey structure featuring a roughcast front with a plinth and a slate roof that has wide panelled and bracket eaves, along with rendered end chimney stacks. The central bay is splayed out, with blind openings on the sides. To the left, there is a one-window bay that is set back, featuring narrow eaves and a hipped roof at the end. The building has small pane sash windows, some of which are horned, with 6 panes on the second floor, 9 panes on the first floor, and 12 panes on the ground floor. Above a modern porch with a classical portico, there is a fixed glazed window. The entrance includes a six-panel door and a fanlight. To the left, there is a modern kitchen extension that leads to a verandah with French windows. At the rear, there are sash windows and tripartite outer windows on the first and ground floors. A later pedimented projection on the ground floor has three windows, with the central one being a 12-pane sash. The lawn at the rear is enclosed by cast iron railings, and the land slopes steeply beyond.

Inside, the building retains a significant amount of contemporary detail. The entrance leads into an octagonal hall that features one Baroque and two broken pedimented doorcases, along with a panelled dado. To the right, there is a dog leg staircase with panelled newels and barley twist balusters. The Drawing Room includes a Tuscan Doric screen with panelled piers at the ends and Adamesque detailing below built-in display cabinets. It also has a ceiling rose, gilded cornice bands, and a Rococo chimneypiece with tapered pilasters and fully modelled festoons. The Dining Room features ¾ height panelling and a Jacobean overmantel, which may have formerly been a bedhead, along with a mantlepiece that could have been a bed board, inscribed with various signatures. There is also a panelled and carved fireplace with a fleur de lys fireback. Additionally, there is a fine Victorian closet at the rear that contains blue and white porcelain by Shanks of Barrhead.
