Description
The War Memorial is a 65-foot high structure designed by Mario Rutelli of Rome, who also created two other works in the town. It features a polygonal, partly dressed rubble design with a tapered stem that has bands and a cushioned base. This base rests on a broader two-tier ‘sarcophagus’ with quoins and copper tablets that commemorate the two world wars. The lower stage is broadly splayed and includes alternating ramps and steps, possibly influenced by Goscombe John's memorial in Port Sunlight. At the top, there is a lead statue of the winged Victory standing on a globe. The stem displays tall, thin wreaths on alternating sides, and on the west face's base, there is a striking figurehead sculpture of a nude lady with a foliage backdrop, symbolizing Humanity emerging from the effects of war, which rests on a pedestal featuring a Great War Medallion. The memorial also includes plaques in both Welsh and English on the stem.
