Description
The War Memorial at Christ Church is an octagonal monument made of oolitic limestone, designed in a late Gothic style and consisting of three stages. The lowest stage features bronze plaques that commemorate those who fell in the Great War, along with additional plaques for the names of the fallen in the Second World War. The second stage is slightly smaller and includes blind tabernacles beneath crocketted ogee arches, with a band of two quatrefoils in each bay at the base. One of the tabernacles has a trefoil head and contains a statue of a soldier from the Great War with arms reversed. The top stage is further reduced and has eight openings with crocketted ogee-headed arches, separated by buttresses that are supported by small flying-buttresses leading to the finials of the lower buttresses. There are gargoyles at both the top and bottom of this stage, along with additional quatrefoil sinkings in between. The top finials are also crocketted.
The base of the memorial consists of four steps made of local limestone, leading up to a paved platform.
