Description

The Whitefield War Memorial, built around 1920, features an addition of a plaque honoring those who fell in the Second World War. It consists of a tapered cruciform column set on a stepped base made of Portland stone. The column has sloped faces on three sides that display bronze plaques listing the names of the fallen from both World Wars. The fourth side features an inscription in the stone commemorating the men of Whitefield who died in the Great War. Atop the column stands a bronze figure of The Winged Victory, positioned on a globe encircled by a serpent. Bronze wreaths and swags are located at the base of the statue. A signature, which is partly obscured, appears on the south-west face of the statue base and seems to read 'Vernon March'. This memorial is a carefully executed sculptural composition of high quality, demonstrating both architectural and historic significance.
