Description
The Church of All Saints is a Grade I listed building, constructed between 1822 and 1826 and designed by Charles Barry, marking his first architectural project. The church features a fanciful mixed gothic style with elongated proportions. Its west tower is built of ashlar and includes a ground stage that creates an exceptionally lofty open porch, flanked by wings with elongated lancet windows. The upper stage of the tower has paired lancets. Each side of the church is adorned with five long windows, each divided into two sections by a panelled band that corresponds to the internal galleries. The structure is topped with battlements and tall pinnacles, and the east end is canted and apsidal.
Inside, the church has slender perpendicular piers that support two tierceron-star plaster vaults, each covering two bays of the nave. The ribbed vault over the apse is mirrored above the west gallery. The stained glass in the east window dates from around 1830 to 1850. Notable monuments include one to James Ramsbottom, who died in 1835, featuring a bust, and another to James Clegg, who died in 1836, which includes a bust on a high base adorned with relief figures of Faith, Charity, and Hope. Additionally, there is a carillon installed in 1906.
