Description
Aberystwyth Castle is a Grade I listed concentric walled castle with a lozenge plan, featuring a dry moat to the west and round corner towers that define the inner and outer wards. The castle is constructed from ruined coursed rubble masonry. To the east, there are remains of Porth Mawr, along with the footings of the hall located to the southwest.
To the west, the more complete inner gate tower is present, with an outer gate beyond it. The gateway features twin apsidal towers, a pointed entrance, a portcullis chase, a crenellated parapet, and a splayed stair turret to the north. The southwest end includes a dungeon, while a mural tower is situated on the south side of the inner ward.
The castle has been converted for recreational use and includes a Druid Circle from the 1916 Eisteddfod. The grounds were laid out by architect John Probart of Shrewsbury around 1800. A retaining wall to the north has a terrace below, which features a Victorian crescent-shaped 8-bay shelter supported by ornamented cast-iron columns.
