Description

Glan-yr-afon is a building constructed of white painted rubble with areas of cob on the front wall. As of August 1995, rethatching was in progress. A recently built rubble gable chimney-stack is located on the right side, and a remade wattle chimney-cone is present on the south gable of the rear wing. The building is a single storey with a three-bay front that features a central door, a replaced 9-pane casement window to the right, and a small window to the left with boarded shutters. The windows have timber lintels and stone sills. The left end has an inserted boarded door with a timber lintel, and above it is a small 6-pane attic window.

The rear cross-wing is staggered to the east. Its main elevation includes a boarded central door and late 19th-century 9-pane windows on each side, with a larger window to the left, all featuring timber lintels. There is a blocked cross-passage door to the rear.

At the time of inspection in August 1995, a complete renovation was underway. The front range has a small fireplace at the east end, which may be secondary, as evidence of a fireplace was discovered at the west end of the tiny building during renovation. This earlier fireplace was likely replaced by the current one, with a doorway inserted in the west gable end. The front range has 20th-century loft and trusses. The rear wing shows straight joints towards the fireplace end, indicating that it was enlarged from a smaller building. The original plan was likely of the cross-passage type, with partitions removed and some cordwood beams of the loft still intact. At the south end, there is a large wattle and plaster fireplace hood, supported by a cross-beam let into the wall on the left and a rubble cheek-wall on the right. Evidence of a former fireplace at the parlour end was also found during renovation. The roof structure consists of three pairs of thin trusses, crossed and pegged at the ridge, with paired purlins and some scantling under the thatch.
