Description
7 Commercial Street is a four-storey building with a cellar, featuring three two-storey industrial houses and a two-storey, six-bay flannel factory above. The houses at Nos 5 and 6 are symmetrical, while No 7 was originally back-to-back with a tunnel passage between them. The structure is built of Flemish bond brick and has a gently pitched slate roof with pitch daubing. It features a saw-toothed eaves cornice and plain bargeboards, with brick stacks at each end.
The factory windows on the fourth floor have three-light timber casements set below the eaves, while the third floor windows are similar but have cambered header arches. The first and ground floors have small paned iron cross windows, with cambered gauged brick voussoirs, shallow reveals, and no sills. The cellars also have cambered header arches.
The doorcases have dripboards on brackets, with six-panel doors for Nos 5 and 6 and a later four-panel door for No 7. There are stone staircases with iron railings leading to the entrances, and a round arch leads to the tunnel passage.
The windows at the rear are mostly modern, with plank doors. The yard contains wash houses and latrines, and there is a separate external timber stair leading to the factory floors, which house the collection of the Newtown Textile Museum.
