Description
6 Commercial Street is a four-storey building with a cellar, comprising three two-storey industrial houses and a two-storey, six-bay flannel factory above. The houses, numbered 5, 6, and 7, are constructed in Flemish bond brick and feature a gently pitched slate roof with a pitch daubed finish. The eaves have a saw-toothed cornice and plain bargeboards, with brick stacks at each end.
The factory windows on the fourth floor have three-light timber casements set below the eaves, while the third floor features similar windows with cambered header arches. The first and ground floors have small paned iron cross windows, all with cambered gauged brick voussoirs and shallow reveals without sills. The cellars also have cambered header arches.
The doorcases have dripboards on brackets, with six-panel doors for Nos 5 and 6, and a later four-panel door for No 7. There are stone staircases with iron railings leading to the entrances, and a round arch leads to a tunnel passage between the houses.
The rear windows are largely modern, and there are plank doors, wash houses, and latrines in the yard. A separate external timber stair provides access to the factory floors, which house the collection of the Newtown Textile Museum.
