Description
The building, known as the Textile Museum over Nos. 5, 6, and 7, is a four-storey structure with a cellar located on Commercial Street in Newtown. It consists of three two-storey industrial houses, each with one window, and a two-storey, six-bay flannel factory situated above them. Nos. 5 and 6 are symmetrical, while No. 7 was originally back-to-back with a tunnel passage between them.
The exterior is constructed of Flemish bond brick and features a gently pitched slate roof with pitch daubing. The building has a saw-toothed eaves cornice and plain barge boards, with brick end stacks. The factory windows on the fourth floor have three-light timber casements set below the eaves, while the third floor windows are similar but have cambered header arches. The first and ground floors contain small paned iron cross windows with cambered gauged brick voussoirs, shallow reveals, and no sills. The cellars also feature cambered header arches.
The doorcases have dripboards supported by brackets, with six-panel doors for Nos. 5 and 6, and a later four-panel door for No. 7. There are stone staircases with iron railings leading to the entrances, and a round arch leads to the tunnel passage.
Most of the windows at the rear are modern, and there are plank doors, wash houses, and latrines in the yard. A separate external timber staircase provides access to the factory floors, which house the collection of the Newtown Textile Museum.
