Description
42 Mount Street is part of a pair of houses, possibly dating from the late 18th century, with much of the exterior detail resulting from a mid-19th century remodelling. The houses are constructed from well-coursed and squared local stone, topped with a slate roof and featuring stone axial stacks at the rear. They rise to three storeys, each designed as a single unit with a double pile plan. The rear elevations were originally lower and have been raised in brick. There are outer entrances on either side; the doorway to No 40 has been renewed, while No 42 retains its original opening, complete with an overlight and a stone lintel decorated with a central rosette. The flanking windows are 8-pane horned sashes. These houses are particularly noteworthy as well-preserved examples of vernacular town houses that utilize local materials.
