Description
The Green Dragon Public House is a pair of buildings that were historically two separate units, a private house (No 9) and a public house (No 10), which were combined around 1980 to 1985. No 10 has been in use as a public house since at least 1754. The buildings likely represent a single phase of construction, with No 9 dated 1744, marked by a plaque with the initials M over I.M. (John Meredith of Broniarth).
The exterior features painted brick with slate roofs and axial stacks located at the rear. The buildings are stepped in height to fit the sloping site and share similar architectural details, although No 10 is larger and has a central entrance. No 9, on the left, has its entrance on the right, featuring a renewed doorway with a moulded architrave, and two 4-pane sash windows with cambered brick heads on each floor to the left. There are plain plat bands above each storey and a moulded eaves cornice, along with two small gabled dormers in the roof. A rubble lean-to is located at the rear, which includes a 6-panelled door with a canopy hood on the return elevation facing Church Road.
No 10 mirrors these details but has a central doorway set in a shallow porch supported by Tuscan columns that carry an entablature. The flanking windows on each floor are 12-pane sashes with cambered brick heads, plain bands above the storeys, and coved eaves. There is also a brick rear wing.
Together, these two buildings form a notable pair of mid-18th century town houses that retain much of their original character.
