Description
The gates and gate piers at the Northern Drive entry to Plas Machynlleth are notable features from the 20th century. They consist of twin central gates flanked by smaller pedestrian gates, with the piers of the pedestrian gates abutting Nos 62 and 64. The gates are made of wrought iron and are set between coursed stone piers. The main gates feature a semicircular overthrow adorned with arabesque and foliage designs, rising to a central finial. Each gate has a lock bar and patterned vertical panels at the ends, as well as oval heraldic shields.
The main piers are topped with gables that have pointed arch recesses on both the front and back sides, which contain red dragons. The left pier includes a slate tablet that commemorates the donation of Plas to the Urban District Council in 1947. Both piers are topped with small iron lamp standards that have four legs, tapered lamps, and finials. The pedestrian gate to the right shares similar design details, although the square-headed gate to the left has been removed.
