Description
Rhos-y-Gweision is a farm situated on a raised river terrace that overlooks the Banwy valley to the southwest. Access to the farm is via fields from a minor road near Bryn-du farm, located 3 kilometers from Llanfair Caereinion. In front of the farmhouse, there are 19th-century hoop-headed iron railings that run the full length of the property, featuring a central gate set on facetted iron stanchions. To the northwest, there are early 19th-century farm buildings that are in poor condition.
The current structure is a remodelling from the early to mid-19th century of an earlier timber-framed farmhouse. The building is two storeys high and originally had a two-unit plan with a gable stack at each end. During the 19th-century remodelling, a third bay was added to the eastern end. The gables and rear wall are made of stone, including a small kitchen extension at the back. The front wall is constructed of red brick laid in Flemish bond, and the roof is covered with slate. The front features three windows with 16-pane sashes, which have flat brick arches with cambered soffits. At the center of the original building, there is a three-panelled, half-glazed door with a doorcase and a small canopy supported by consoles.
The interior was not accessible and was disused at the time of inspection in October 1995. Rhos-y-Gweision is listed as a notable example of a well-executed early 19th-century enhancement of an earlier farmhouse, which has seen little alteration since its remodelling.
