Description

Pentyrch Smithy is a late 18th-century building, though it may have earlier origins. It is marked as a 'smithy' on the Enclosure award and the second edition Ordnance Survey map, likely taking over the business of the nearby Hen Efail. A sign above the open eastern bay reads "Pentyrch Smith." It is said to have served as a workshop for a wheelwright in the early 20th century. The western bay may be an addition, and it appears that the roof has been raised, as it was originally only one storey.

The building has a two-storey, two-unit plan with a lobby entry house featuring an axial stack and a western gable stack, along with a workshop and open cart shed at the eastern end. There are two lean-to outshots at the rear. The exterior is constructed of random rubble masonry, which has been whitened throughout. The roofs are slate-covered, with the southern slope retaining many old, thick slates. The house features one tripartite iron-framed window with a central opening light and a four-light timber casement, both located below the eaves. On the ground floor, there are two four-light timber casements, and the door is a modern, four-panel half-glazed design. A simple open porch consists of a cast iron sheet bent to form a pent roof, supported by iron rods with spiralled ends.

The workshop and cart shed have a four-light iron-framed casement window on the first floor and a four-light timber window on the ground floor. Above the cart shed, the weatherboarded timber frame has two three-light timber windows and a central boarded door. A massive chimney stack, believed to be from the smithy, is located on the northern wall between the house and the workshop.

The interior was not accessible during the inspection in October 1995. Pentyrch Smithy is listed as a relatively unaltered example of a rural industrial workshop.
