Description
Yr Ysgwrn Farmhouse is a two-storey, three-window vernacular farmhouse dating from the 19th century, with a contemporary linear farm building attached to the left. It is constructed from coursed, squared rubble masonry and features a moderately pitched slate roof with plain eaves and close verges, but no rainwater goods. The building has stone stacks and water tabling.
On the first floor, there are small 16-pane sash windows set under the eaves. The ground floor has larger sash windows flanking a central doorway, all with deep stone lintels. The half-glazed door consists of small panes over two panels. A coursed rubble forecourt wall, which was formerly whitewashed, is present, with stone gateposts and sidewalls leading to a flagged path to the door.
The rear elevation shows inferior masonry techniques. There is a small outshot to the right with a 4-pane fixed light window, and two additional small windows on the ground floor at the rear, also with deep stone lintels.
Adjoining to the left are the cartshed and stable, built in the same style as the house with a continuous outshot to the rear. The stable features a gable end entry, a broad cart entry to the right with a concrete lintel (originally a cambered stone voussoir arch), and a loft window above. The stable door to the left is flanked by stone piers supporting a slate slab, with a loft door above, also with stone lintels.
Inside, the kitchen/hall on the left has a broad fireplace with a mantle shelf, a brick arched flue, a cast iron range, and a good iron crane. There is a small bedchamber in the outshot at the rear, and a pantry that is partitioned off with vertical slate slabs. The doors are strap and pintle hung plank doors, and the floors are stone flagged. The parlour contains five of Hedd Wyn's bardic chairs.
