Description
No 1 Dairy Square, part of the Dairy Square at Powis Castle, is a building that dates from the mid-18th century. It was depicted as a farmhouse and dairy on T.F. Pritchard's plan of 1771.
The exterior features brick construction with a slate roof and two axial brick stacks. The building has two storeys with an attic and a six-window range. The entrance to No 1 is located to the left and is accompanied by two windows, while No 2 has its entrance flanked by windows on the right. Both entrances have six-panelled doors with plain overlights. The windows throughout are 12-pane sashes with flat arched heads. A plain string course runs between the storeys and continues across the gable end, which has blocked windows at the first floor, and is also present on the rear elevation. The majority of the rear elevation features a brick and rubble outshut, which includes a fine cast-iron porch at its left angle. The brickwork of the main range above the outshut appears to have been raddled.
This 18th-century building retains much of its original character and is an important part of the early domestic features associated with Powis Castle.
