Description
The Bothy is a house of 1906, built adjacent to a former dove-house and other agricultural buildings associated with Powis Castle. A brick wall with stone copings and a range of outbuildings against its inner face appear to date from the 18th century. A rear wing of the house is likely an earlier survival, while other outbuildings at the back of a small yard are probably late 19th or early 20th century.
The house is timber-framed on a brick plinth with stone copings, and has a red tiled roof with brick and terracotta star-shaped stacks. The framing is close-studded and pegged, with decorative quatrefoil panels flanking the windows, and curved tension braces at angles. A single-storeyed porch with a steep chamfered archway provides access from Dairy Square; the main elevations overlook the garden. The south elevation is two storeys high, with a two-window range, and a balustraded and arcaded loggia entrance (now partially filled in) to the right. Wide gables feature pierced trefoils in the bargeboards over the windows; the left-hand bay has a single light to the ground floor and a canted oriel window above, while the right-hand bay has a full-height canted bay window with transoms to the lower lights. All windows have chamfered mullions and leaded lights. The west gable end has a jettied upper storey carried on finely moulded brackets, a 4-centred archway to a recessed porch (with a similarly arched panelled inner door), and a canted bay window with mullioned and transomed lights. A 4-light mullioned window with a quatrefoil panelled apron is located on the first floor. The northeast rear wing is partially rubble and is probably of earlier date.
A high brick wall with stone copings forms the west boundary of a yard to the rear of the house. Against it is a range of timber-framed outbuildings, likely dating from the 18th century. The cross-range to the rear of this yard is brick with stone dressings, featuring louvred vents in the plain tiled roof and paired doorways towards the left, alongside a series of mullioned windows with hood moulds.
The Bothy is a good example of the Neo-Vernacular 'Old English' style in Edwardian architecture, and contributes significantly to the character of the formal garden, which was laid out in 1912.
