Description
The Gate to the Fountain Garden is a Grade II listed structure designed by G.F. Bodley in 1912, commissioned by Violet, Lady Powis as a gift for her husband, the Fourth Earl. This gate is a replica of an early 18th-century gate depicted in a print of Powis House, the family's London residence.
The gate features ashlar piers with moulded panels and heavy moulded caps that flank a pair of iron gates, which are cast with some wrought iron decoration. The gates are elaborately adorned with scroll-work that includes the Herbert Arms. Originally, the piers were topped with lead wyverns, which were missing at the time of the last survey in May 1995.
This gate is a notable example of 20th-century ironwork and plays a significant role in the early 20th-century garden layout at Powis, contributing both visually and historically to the garden's design.
