Description
The stone vase located on the east bank of the gardens at Powis Castle is a notable piece of garden sculpture. Although little is known about its origins, it is set within a wilderness garden that was laid out in the 1770s. The vase may have originally been intended for the Baroque water garden, which was largely completed by 1705 and occupied the flat land at the base of the garden terraces. A perspective view of Powis Castle from 1742 depicts a pair of vases or fountains of a similar design.
The vase features a wide shallow basin supported by a fluted stem, which rests on an oval base adorned with moulded panels. Its prominent position aligns with the central axis of the castle, making it an eye-catching feature in the landscape.
