Description

Apple Slope Terrace is located in the gardens at Powis Castle and is attributed to the designer William Winde, who worked on the castle from around 1673 and was involved in rebuilding the Powis London residence between 1684 and 1688. While there is no definitive dating for the gardens, they likely began after 1668 and were mostly completed by 1705. From 1703, Adrian Duvall, a Frenchman, is also linked to the gardens, credited with blasting rock to create the terraces and managing the hydraulics of the now-lost water-garden. It is possible that Winde started the work before 1688 and that Duvall continued it under Winde's direction.

The terrace features symmetrically arranged steps that lead up to a central projecting feature. The stone steps are flanked by brick parapets with moulded stone copings and panelled stone piers. The brick wall between the parapets appears to have been rebuilt in the 20th century but is topped by the original stone balustraded parapet.

Apple Slope Terrace is listed at grade I as part of the exceptional late 17th-century terraced gardens at Powis, recognized as a very rare example of an Italianate garden in Britain.
