Description
The Marquess Gate, along with its steps leading to the eastern entrance of Powis Castle, and a flanking wall to the north, likely dates back to the 15th century. The gate tower itself was probably added around this time, and became the main approach to the castle following its remodelling as a country house by the Herbert family in the years after 1587. The dating and authorship of the gates remains uncertain; suggestions include manufacture by Adrian Duvall around 1688-1696, the Davies Brothers of Croes Foel circa 1720, or John Warren in 1710. An alternative attribution to a Mr. Willis in 1707 is also possible.
The gate is characterized by rusticated piers with projecting moulded cornices, supporting ball finials on elongated bases. These piers flank a pair of wrought iron gates, complete with side panels and an overthrow, all richly decorated with foliage, scrollwork and plate-iron shells. The overthrow is topped by a coronet. The gates give access to a flight of five sections of stone steps leading to the eastern entrance of the castle, with a stepped parapet wall to the north. A higher retaining wall is located north of the steps, enclosing a former bowling green, and links the gates with the old kitchens and servants’ quarters on the north side of the castle. This Baroque frontispiece is remarkable for its dramatic design and detailed craftsmanship, representing a notably unusual feature.
