Description

46 and 48 Friar Street is a building in Worcester, constructed around 1500 to 1550. Originally built as a single house, it has since been divided into two separate residences, numbered 46 and 48 from right to left. The structure features a timber frame with render and a plain clay tile roof. There is a small brick stack on the front wall, left of center, with an oversailing detail and pot, and a larger brick and stone stack at the rear right.

The building has a rectangular plan with two unequal bays and an outshut with a catslide roof at the rear, which was originally a separate range now linked to the main structure. It stands two storeys tall with an attic and has three first-floor windows arranged in a 1:2 pattern. The only visible external features from the ground floor are the storey posts, joists, and bressumer supporting the jettied first floor. The first-floor windows are 2/2 sashes.

No. 48 features a 6-pane shop window on the left and a glazed door on the right, while No. 46 has a central glazed door flanked by 4-pane shop windows, all of which are 20th-century additions. There are also two renewed gabled dormers with paired side-hung casements.

Although the interior was not inspected, historical research indicates that by 1674, there was already a smaller single bay timber-framed building behind the chimney stack of No. 46. This structure is likely later than the front range, but its exact date and purpose remain uncertain. It is suggested that this building became a separate dwelling and that Nos. 46 and 48 were also divided into distinct units.
