Description
21 and 23 Friar Street are two shops that were originally built as two houses and shops, with a row of cottages at the rear. They date back to 1739, although the southern part may have origins from the 16th century. There have been later additions and alterations, including mid-19th century shop fronts on the ground floor. The exterior features stucco over brick, with timber-frame and brick nogging in the passageway. The building has a renewed plain tile roof and a truncated brick stack at the right end.
The structure is two storeys high with attics and has four first-floor windows arranged in a 2:2 pattern. The first floor features 6/6 sash windows in near-flush frames with sills, and there are modillion eaves. There are three attic dormers; two on the left have gabled casement windows, while the third is flat-roofed with a 3/6 sash window. The ground floor has timber shop fronts with pilaster strips, a frieze, and a cornice on the right. The glazed windows include two mullions on the left and a cylindrical mullion on the right, both set on an apron. The entrances on the right and left are part-glazed doors, with the right entrance being recessed. Between the shops is a passageway that provides access to the former cottages at the rear, featuring rectangular panels of timber framing.
The interior has not been inspected. Historical surveys conducted by the City of Worcester, which owned the site, indicate that No. 21 and the row of cottages at the rear were newly built in 1739.
