Description

No. 25 Friar Street is a house that has been converted into two shops with flats above. It is believed to have originated as a timber-framed structure in the mid-16th century, with later additions and alterations, including a brick front added in the early to mid-18th century and a mid-19th century shop front. The building was subdivided into two shops and flats around 1988. It features painted brick under a plain clay tile roof, with a south gable-end stack on the rear slope. The windows have painted stone sills, and the shop front is designed with an L-shaped plan and a 'cat-slide' roof at the rear right, which creates additional space on the first and second floors. The staircases were renewed and repositioned around 1988.

The building has three storeys. On the first floor, there are four windows, which are 6/6 sashes set in near-flush frames beneath cambered brick arches with sills. The second floor has similar openings, but with paired side-hung casements. There is a projecting brick band above the first-floor window heads. The shop front features a dentilled cornice with moulded console brackets at the ends and above the central door opening. Moulded pier caps with roundels that incorporate a floral motif are also present, along with similar roundels on the shop fascia.
