Description

The former Parish Church of St Mary and Pryce Mausoleum, located on Old Church Street in Newtown, is a ruined structure featuring a double nave and a west tower. The building is constructed from rubble with red sandstone dressings, and the south wall has been largely restored. In 1902, buttresses and a pointed arch were added. The chancel includes a priest's doorway with a hoodmould and a piscina that may date back to the 14th century. The eastern end of the church survives only to sill level, while the northern wall has only its foundations remaining.

The west tower is three stories high and features a lap boarded timber bell stage topped with a pyramidic slate roof. The second story has two 14th-century two-light cusped windows, which have been largely restored, while the first story has single slit-like windows. There is also a restored early stilted pointed arched doorway with a hoodmould.

Inside, there is a late 15th-century screen, angel roof bosses, and early 18th-century monuments. The bells from this church have been relocated to St David's Church on New Road. The church originally included an interesting timber arcade.

Within the church, there is a small Gothic mausoleum for the Pryce family of Newtown Hall, built in 1900 with white marble and red sandstone dressings. It features a gabled stone tile roof with gable parapets, a pointed arch door with a hood, and two-light pointed windows on the flanks.
