Description
1 Penybryn is a Grade II listed building featuring scribed rendered elevations with painted quoins and a dentil eaves course made of brick along High Street. The building has a slate roof and includes a tall yellow brick chimney on the left and a red brick chimney on the right.
The elevation facing High Street has three storeys and four windows. The right bay, known as Abel House, features an eight-pane sash window on the second floor and a sixteen-pane sash window on the first floor. The other properties have larger three-light casement windows on the second floor and casement windows with nine large panes on the first floor, as seen in a photograph from around 1905. On the ground floor, to the left, there is a window matching the first floor and a doorway with an early 19th-century type doorcase and a six-panelled door. This is followed by a similar window and doorway, then a broader 19th-century shop window, and another doorway with a six-panelled door, concluding with a broad window from the early 20th century.
The elevation facing Brook Street features two gables. There are two second-floor windows with sixteen-pane sashes and two first-floor windows with sixteen-pane sashes. On the ground floor to the left, there is a doorway with a hood (which was moved to this position in the early 20th century) and a shop window at the front. To the right, there is an early 19th-century type doorcase and a blocked window.
Inside, the ground floors have heavy longitudinal beams and some exposed timber partitions.
