Description

15 and 17 High Street in Dalkeith is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey and attic building that originally served as a house and now contains two shops on the ground floor. The structure is made of finely droved ashlar, with the northern elevation constructed from rubble. It features raised painted cills, angle margins, an eaves cornice, and a leaded blocking course.

On the eastern elevation facing High Street, there are two late 19th-century shop fronts flanked by pilasters, each with panelled aprons. The doors are located in the outer bays, and there are plate glass windows in the centre. The first floor has a regular arrangement of windows.

The western elevation includes a circular stair tower at the centre, topped with a roof that sweeps into the main pitch, and features a four-pane window. The flanking bays have a regular pattern of fenestration.

The northern elevation is blank, with several bull stones protruding from the left side. The southern elevation is attached to Nos 9-13 High Street, which is listed separately.

The building has a 12-pane glazing pattern in the sash and case windows, although there are plate glass replacements on the second floor of the western side. There are also two canted and piended slate-hung dormer windows on the eastern side, which are slightly misaligned to the right. The roof is finished with grey slates, and there is a truncated rendered stack on the northern side, along with the remains of a former mutual gable.
