Description
9 High Street in Dalkeith is an earlier 19th-century, three-storey and attic, four-bay tenement situated on sloping ground, featuring two shops on the ground floor. The building is constructed of ashlar, with the ground floor of the east elevation painted, while the side and rear elevations are made of rubble. There are cill courses at the first and second floors, along with an eaves cornice and a blocking course.
The east elevation facing High Street has a door leading to the tenement (No 11) with a plate glass fanlight in the bay to the left of the center. Modern shop fronts are located on either side, with No 9 on the left and No 13 occupying two bays to the right. The first and second floors have regular window arrangements.
The west elevation is three bays wide, with the right bay recessed. It features regularly spaced windows and decorative cast-iron window guards on the first-floor windows in the left and center bays. The outer right bay has windows leading to a gabled return.
The north elevation is blank above the adjoining buildings, Nos 15 and 17 High Street. It has a gabled elevation to the right, with fenestration on the left and the gable line of a former outbuilding to the right.
The south elevation is also blank above the adjoining buildings, Nos 5 and 7 High Street.
The east elevation has replacement glazing, while the remaining elevations feature a mix of small-pane and plate glass glazing patterns in sash and case windows. There is a canted and piended slate-hung dormer window off-center to the right on the east pitch, with coped skews. The south elevation has an ashlar truncated gablehead stack, while the north elevation has broad rendered and lined gablehead stacks. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there is a flush downpipe channel to the left.
